These are the absolute laws of the land within the Kingdom of Armonia. Individual Principalities, Duchies, Counties, Baronies, and Estates are not prevented from passing additional laws so long as they do not conflict with any law listed herein.
These Laws apply and protect all citizens of Armonia and her allies as long as they stand upon her lands. Foreign persons may, at the pleasure of the crown, or its agents, may be granted protections under these laws. All such persons Regardless if they have been granted the protections of a citizen are expected to follow the laws of Armonia so long as they are within her holdings.
In the case of Armonian Citizens traveling outside of the borders of Armonian soil; local laws take precedence if such Laws are part of a recognized state not at war with Armonia & their laws are just and enforced fairly. Nobles of Armonia travelling abroad are required to adhere to & administer the Laws of Armonia for themselves, their wards and retainers. Armonian Nobility always benefit from the protection of Armonian Law. Enforcement of the laws will always occur after returning to Armonian soil.
Any individual may too be afforded protection Under & Bound to follow Armonian Laws if they Submit, in writing, to a Noble of Armonia a request to receive such protection. The requirements for such is that the written record must have 2 witnesses to account that they shall be travelling outside the bounds of Armonia and request the protections of the Kingdom's Laws while away. This request may be denied for any reason by the Nobles processing the request, an amount of time these protections are given for may also be specified. This information need not be made public, however it must be made known to an individual being sentenced because of these protections during the administration of law for a crime they committed.
Judgment and sentencing by a Noble or their designee (Magistrate) need not include a trial nor even the presence of the accused, though a trial is encouraged. If a trial is granted, it is the responsibility of the accused to gather witnesses in their defense. If witnesses are not present at the time of the trial, no additional time will be allotted to summon them. Armonia maintains a three strike rule, and it must be noted that anyone who merits a third punishment for any crime will find no mercy and receive a punishment consummate with the severity of that crime.
Once a sentence has been pronounced the convicted is often granted a period of time (up to 45 minutes) to gather any fines, surrender to the authorities, or prepare for death. In the event that the convicted cannot pay a fine (with the exception of “loss of all property”) they will be required to surrender property- barring one weapon of the judge's choice- equal to the value of the fine. If the punishment of the crime includes death, it is the Noble's decision as to the manner of death unless the law specifies otherwise. Note: a punishment of Death requires it be meted to its full extent and that the spirit dissipates to seek resurrection. Also in the case of loss of all property in regards to spirit linked/locked items, the individual will have the link severed at their own cost, unless the presiding Noble allows that as the individuals’ one weapon of choice.
Nobility retain complete authority to adjust sentencing as they see fit, so long as the punishment is just and in line with the severity of the crime.
Should a Noble be on the receiving end of charges in trial, they are given the right to be tried by their Liege Lord.
Please note that these laws are presented in a truncated format for brevity.
The sentencing of these crimes typically include: Public Beatings and Financial Restitutions (up to 25 gold). In more egregious cases Spirit Marking/branding with their crime and/or Financial Retribution (upto 50 gold) may occur.
Accomplice: An associate in crime. One who willfully operates, aids, or assists in the commission of a crime either by action or inaction. The accomplice shall bear criminal responsibility equal to those they have aided.
Arson: Defined as
In cases where grievous injury or death is a result of the arson, additional charges of assault or murder are warranted.
Assault: The willful attacking of another citizen by any means including weapons, spells, alchemy, potions or traps upon another person without their consent. If the assault results in resurrection the charge is defined as murder.
Note: It is known that some Adventurers practice sparring matches sometimes called “Jester Wrestling”; any accidental injury of a Third Party by this activity will result in Charges for all participants.
Attempted Assault: An unlawful attempt or declaration (in any form) upon an individual or group with violence or to cause unwanted harm or mischief. An attempt or offer to harm an individual or group without success, as one readies their arms in a threatening manner to another or strikes at them and misses.
Bribery: The offering, giving, receiving, or solicitation of something of value for the purpose of influencing the action of an agent of the kingdom in the responsible discharge of his or her public or legal duties
Burglary: Entering into another citizen’s home without consent, by means peaceful or otherwise, and committing any crime therein.
Calling Upon Chaos (V1): The use of any spell, cantrip, or item that involves calling upon or invoking the powers of Chaos, including both those delivered by full incant, magically, or through Elemental or Arcane means. This also includes the willful and consenting possession of any item that possesses Chaos based properties with the exception of Elemental Aura. Note: This charge includes the casting of Control Undead.
Please note depending on the command given to the Undead, additional charges will likely include Assault.
Also Note: In the case of confiscation of the offending item, the individual responsible for it’s retrieval is not subject to this Law if they in turn do not use this item, but deliver it to the proper authorities for immediate destruction.
Also Note: In the case of the creation of Undead, this charge is Necromancy, not Calling Upon Chaos.
Calling Upon Chaos: (V2): The willful use of any Item, Spell, Cantrip, or Ability which Invokes or Calls upon Chaos in order to cause harm to another creature or create any of the following effects; Cause Disease, Taint Blood, and Wither Limb. As well as the use of Elemental Chaos in any form for the use of healing undead or harming the living. If the spell is Create Undead or Help Undead, or abilities which duplicate these spells the charge is elevated to Necromancy.
Conspiracy: The knowledge of and willful cooperation, or the planning, by more than one person to break any laws of the Kingdom of Armonia. (A combination or confederation between two or more willing persons for the purpose of committing by their joint efforts some criminal act or some act which is innocent in itself but becomes criminal when done by the concerted action of the conspirators.) If the conspiracy committed is against a noble the charge may be considered Treason, depending on the severity. Anyone convicted of this crime is also summarily convicted of Accomplice..
Contempt of a Noble’s Title: The defamation of a Noble’s station, or their ability to perform the duties thereof, or disrespect to the Crown and its agents through any of the following actions:
Note: In the case of insulting a Noble personage directly, use Mockery of a Noble instead.
Also note: Disobeying a noble order with treasonous intent elevates the crime to Treason.
Counterfeiting\Forgery: The act of forging or producing a copy of a document, signature, goldpiece, formal component, or work of art. This also includes the sale or trade of false formal components represented as real components. (Falsely making or materially altering by hand or otherwise with intent to defraud, any document or symbol which if genuine might apparently be of legal efficacy or the foundation of a legal claim.)
Note: Intent of the forgery will be taken into consideration. ie. Forging a noble order with treasonous intent elevates the crime to Treason, whereas counterfeiting an IOU may be coupled with Theft.
Kidnapping: The unlawful taking and holding of a citizen against his, her or their own will, and any attempt to ransom these captives. This also includes the forcible and unlawful confinement of an individual. Against a commoner this charge may also be coupled with Assault; in the case of a Noble it will be coupled with Treason.
Libel: One person or group of persons issuing or presenting a false statement or accusation pertaining to any other by the use of print, writing, pictures, or signs. It is a crime to print, write, publish or knowingly issue false statements with the intent to injure the character or image of another.
Note: In the case of Libel against Nobility, the charge issued is Mockery of a Noble.
Mockery of a Noble: The defamation of a Noble’s character through insults, lies, or mockery. If this is used to incite rebellion the charge issued is Treason.
Negligence: Any action taken in which an individual, by refraining to use reasonable care in their actions, resulted in the death or injury of another.
Slander: The speaking of false or malicious words concerning another whereby injury results to their reputation. In the case of a Noble, the charge should be Mockery of a Noble instead.
Tax Evasion: The failure to pay any taxes levied by the Kingdom, Principality, County, or any Baronies of which individuals are a citizen.
Note: Visiting adventurers are also subject to some of these taxes.
Theft: Theft: The taking of another citizen's property without permission. This includes but is not limited to:
The sentencing of these crimes will typically be: loss of life; Financial Retribution (upto 50 gold); Obliteration (or equivalent thereof); and/or Outlawing in the case of the more egregious crimes.
Assassination: While the taking of another's life is covered by the crime of murder, assassination is both the premeditated murder of a citizen for a fee and the hiring of such assassins. Such action is also, by definition, Conspiracy.
Flight from Prosecution: The attempt to evade prosecution by the rightful force of law in Armonia. The punishment for this will be no less than the most grievous punishment sentenced for the crime being fled, plus additional execution and loss of legal protection.
Murder: The willful taking of another citizen's life, premeditated or not. In the case of causing permanent death of an individual, the convicted may be charged as a second offense.
Note: This charge is only in the case that someone dissipates; if the individual is granted a Life spell before they dissipate, the charge is reduced to Assault.
Necromancy: Defined as any of the following:
A. The use of any Spell, Cantrip, Ability or Item that:
B. The willful and consenting possession of any item that possesses necromantic properties.
Noble Impersonation: The act of falsely portraying oneself as a member of the nobility by document, regalia, or statement for the purpose of deception. Dressing up as a noble in costume (e.g. for a play) or pretending to be a noble for entertainment purposes is generally not considered a crime, provided that those involved recognize the imposter is not a real noble, and the imposter is not trying to deceive those involved into thinking they are.
Pretending that a noble has given you authority to act in their name when they have not is also considered an act of Noble Impersonation. Committing a crime while impersonating a Noble can elevate the charge to Treason.
Perjury: To knowingly lie or make false or misleading statements to a Noble, Magistrate or persons given the power to conduct an official investigation, or trial, while they are in the course of such an investigation or trial.
Slavery: Defined as any of the following:
Treason: The crime of betraying the Kingdom of Armonia, especially by attempting to kill the sovereign or overthrow the rule of its nobility.
Treason is the most serious crime in the kingdom and should be invoked with due and proper consideration and solemnity.
In instances where the convicted is sentenced with a 'Public Beating’, they will be placed within a circle of the townsfolk and each citizen is permitted to strike the criminal once. Citizens are not required to participate in this sentencing, unless ordered to by the presiding Noble. Should the charged party request it, they retain the right to receive their ‘Public Beating’ at the hands of an individual, with the amount of blows delivered equal to the number of individuals present. The individual will be selected by the presiding Noble.
In instances where the convicted is sentenced to an 'Obliteration’, they will be given the choice of a successful Obliteration cast upon their spirit (with the components and scroll provided by the crown), or two self inflicted Deaths witnessed by the presiding Noble within one hour of the sentencing.
In instances where the convicted is sentenced to a 'Spirit Mark/Branding’, the sentence will be considered served after the Spirit Mark has expired after it’s full duration or the Brand has been present for two years. If the individual re-offends and is convicted after completing their sentence, the conviction is considered a first offense in the three-strike system.
In instances where the convicted is sentenced to a ‘Financial Restitution’, the presiding Noble is given full discretion as to the amount of the charge (up to 25 gold).
In instances where the convicted is sentenced to ‘Financial Retribution’, the individual will lose all items that are regularly in their use (regardless of whether it is an item that they personally own or not), and up to 50 gold worth of gear and/or coin. If they are unable to pay the fine’s worth, they may be levied additional lasting requirements such as:
● Repaying a given an amount of future gatherings’ worth of treasure to the offended party;
● Repaying the price via service to the Crown. The services will be rendered based on the skill level of the convicted. i.e a commoner will not be required to complete adventuring related tasks, and an adventurer will not be required to work in an internment camp.
To be declared Outlaw for a designated amount of time is to be stripped of all protections and rights granted under the laws of the Kingdom of Armonia. An Outlaw is still subjected to all structures and responsibilities of the law under Kingdom rule. If Indefinite Outlaw status is declared, the convicted must wait the minimum duration of a year before they can attempt to gain the sponsorship of a Baron to plead their case. With Baronial sponsorship, they may appeal to the Duke of the lands in which the crime was committed to have their Outlaw status revoked.
